Navigating Preanalytical Variables: Supporting Quality and Accuracy in Hemostasis Testing

Sponsored by: Diagnostica Stago, Inc.
Speaker

Abstract

Quality efforts in the clinical laboratory are always under the microscope- a hyper-focus for laboratorians from start to finish.  Recognizing the external factors that affect hemostasis testing, understanding what can be done to avoid them, and enacting processes to ensure quality, are essential efforts. This presentation will look at the underlying effects of process, focusing on the many variables that affect hemostasis testing as well as the data focused standards and publications that help laboratories provide accurate, high-quality results as a part of the patient care team.

Learning Objectives

  1. Analyze the factors that influence the quality of a patient specimen, from sample collection to its receipt in the laboratory.
  2. Examine the proper handling and preparation techniques for laboratory samples and explain the dynamic processes of in vitro sample clotting.
  3. Evaluate the impact of Hemolysis, Icterus, and Lipemia (HIL) on testing and distinguish between the factors that can be mitigated versus those that cannot.
  4. Discuss resources available to laboratories that provide guidance on managing preanalytical variables, sample preparation, and handling for hemostasis testing.
